BJD Restringing Tutorial – Single-Jointed MSD – Step by Step Walkthrough

Join me as I walk through the process of how to restring a BJD! My model is a Volks MSD F-04 – a single-jointed BJD.

The video is a bit long, but there is no time lapse and no voice over! Each step is fully explained to help you feel comfortable restringing your own ball-jointed doll.

Not sure what size elastic you need? Cool Cat has an awesome size chart!

BJD Meetup Planning: Buddy System

Plan a Successful BJD Meetup

Use the Buddy System

Have you ever planned a meetup, posted it everywhere you can think of online, told all of your doll friends about it, and showed up on the specified day and time only to wait for others to show up? And wait…… and wait….. and wait…. only to realize several hours later that nobody else is coming? No? Well, consider yourself lucky!

I remember years ago, shortly after I joined the hobby and experienced the above scenario, a friend and I made an agreement that we would always schedule a meetup when the other could attend. This would ensure that, even if nobody else showed up, there would always be at least one other person there.

If you’re new to the hobby, it makes sense that you may not have another doll collector to join you – that’s OK! See if another friend or family member would be willing to hang out for a while until others show up. This way you won’t have to wait by yourself and have someone to chat with while waiting.

There doesn’t have to be a big to-do made about where or when a meetup will be – just plan it with one other person and post online to let others know where you will be and when you will be there. If others can show up – they will! If not, at least you’ll have a good time with your friend or family!

Restoration fo Elfdoll Soah

Dye Removal Process on Elfdoll Soah

I originally posted this on my LiveJournal ten years ago (10!! omg it’s been 10 years!) when I had the opportunity to purchase an Elfdoll Soah from a friend who had sent her out to be dyed. When he got her back, the dye job was extremely uneven and streaky.

At the time, I had been wanting a Soah for years and the opportunity was just too good to pass up. So I jumped! …. haha, that’s a lie… I grabbed her up so fast it would have made your head spin!

I didn’t know quite what I was getting into, though.

Unfortunately, when it came to record-keeping, I didn’t fully think things through. When I received her, I didn’t have her in my apartment for more than 5 minutes before I started the process of removing the purple dye. That means I only have photos of purple-dyed doll parts rather than the full doll.

Apologies in advance for the size of the photos. Keep in mind, this was originally posted in 2009, and posted images were a lot smaller back then…

Streaky Purple Doll Parts

The dye job was so uneven and streaky over her entire body and face. I only have a couple of pictures of some of the body parts showing just how bad it was – but imagine this over the entire doll!

The Scrubbing Process

A friend of mine came over and we started the dye removal process by soaking her in Windsor & Newton Brush Cleaner and Restorer and using a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to scrub her down. Surprisingly, this (along with elbow grease!) actually took off most of the dye!

Dye Removal Complete!

After much scrubbing and sanding, and even more sanding and scrubbing, she was declared done! There was still purple dye inside her stringing channels that we couldn’t reach, but overall, she came out looking fabulous!

3 types of meetups - public, private, and conventions.

3 Types of BJD Meetups

What types of meetups are there, anyway?

Well, there are basically 3 different types of meetups that can take place in a variety of locations. These include public spaces, private residences, and conventions/events. I’ve been to, and lead, a large number of meetups since 2005 and have found pros and cons for each type.

1. Public Spaces

Public spaces can really be split into 2 sub-sections – 1a. Indoor and 1b. Outdoor.

I’ve provided a quick list of potential public meetup locations below.

1a. Indoor Meetups

These meetups can take place anywhere indoors in a public space. Restaurants and libraries tend to make up the bulk of these types of meetups, in my experience, but are by no means the end-all, be-all of locations.

Restaurants that have a private room that can be reserved are usually best for keeping food and dolls separate while eating. While that isn’t necessary, some find it to be the most desirable.

Most public libraries have conference rooms that can be reserved for non-profit or community groups. Some will have rules against selling within the building, but that can be worked around by exchanging money outside.

If you live in a cold climate, winter meetups at a conservatory or arboretum are a fantastic option to see some green, take outdoors-type photos, and warm up a bit.

1b. Outdoor Meetups

Outdoor meetups can take place anywhere outside – from public parks to strip malls, beaches to botanical gardens.

It is usually easier to find inexpensive (free) meet up locations outside, but you will be at the mercy of the weather.

If it’s not too hot, too cold, raining, snowing, etc., outdoor meetups can be fantastic photo opportunities without worrying too much about time constraints.

2. Private Residences

It’s possible you, or someone near you is willing to open up your home to other BJD collectors.

These types of meetups can be a great way to get to know others in your area while having your dolls in the home of another collector – some who “gets it.”

Want to go to a meet up at someone’s house, but not comfortable going by yourself? Ask a friend to go with you! If they don’t want to stay the whole time, ask if they will come for the beginning and offer to have them drive separate so they can leave when you are comfortable.

3. Conventions/Events

If you’ve ever been to a convention or other large event, you’ve surely seen larger groups of people getting together for one reason or another.

Many times, conventions will have Facebook groups or online forums that can be used to organize “unofficial” meetups throughout the event. Chances are, there are others in the hobby who are attending and would love to meet up. Check out the threads or requests for meetups – if you don’t find any, don’t be afraid to make your own!

A quick list of potential meetup locations:

  • Fast food restaurant (McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, etc.)
  • Diner (IHOP, Denny’s, Perkins, etc.)
  • Pub/Tavern
  • Food Court (such as Mitsuwa, a Japanese marketplace with a food court)
  • Independently owned diners/restaurants (mom & pop restaurants)
  • Public Library
  • Conservatory or Arboretum
  • Coffee Shop or Bakery (if there’s a seating area)
  • Public Park or Nature Preserve
  • Botanical Gardens
  • Strip Mall (if there’s a seating area)
  • Beach
  • Doll Shop

BJD Measurements | Tinies!

Size charts for BJDs have been started, and the Tinies chart has been posted!

Check it out!

There is a ton of information! To view it all, you can scroll both left & right, and up & down.

If you’re looking for a specific company or size, use the search box on top of the measurement chart, and it will automatically filter what is displayed based on what is entered. Want to sort the chart? Simply click on a column header to sort by measurements, companies, or models.

I know several dolls and companies are missing from the chart. If you’d like to help fill them in, please send me a message with measurements of missing dolls/companies. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated!

In the meantime, the SD size chart has been started and should be posted soon. After that, the MSD chart will be started & posted. Keep an eye out for updates!

Hope the chart helps!
